Noir Furniture

The search for new and interesting suppliers of furniture is a constant quest. It is usually a series of small conquests, and occasionally you come across someone and you wonder why on earth you didn't know about them before. I feel that way about Noir Furniture. What makes it even more frustrating is that they are a local Los Angeles company.

Their look is based in tradition but with a clean simple edge. I think their chairs are great and also the beds have a tremendous look too, lots of details. The finishing is pretty good too, especially considering the price point.

They have the furniture produced in China and Indonesia, which allows them to keep the price manageable, yet still use solid wood, which gives it a true sense of quality.

Whats your favorite piece?

It seems so often that I hear people use budget as an excuse for poor design, but that shouldn't be the case. Take a look at the bedroom above as an example, most of the fabric that I used is burlap, one of the most humble fabrics you can buy, quite literally a potato sack!

I used the burlap to make the draped bedside tables (with silk used on the gusset), then again as the bed cover, and again on the sliding window panels. The simple fabric gives the room a great texture that is a little unexpected interest.

So the lesson here is don't let a small budget be your crutch, it can actually be the thing that forces you to think even more creatively.

More of The W Residences Hollywood

Here is a shot of the Master Bedroom at The W Hollywood Residences. All of the furniture and fabrics here came from the Dessin Fournir Companies. The bed is a design by Kerry Joyce and the fabrics are Classic Cloth. The back wall is upholstered in a distressed velvet that sets the mood for the room. I like the mix of contemporary art as well, it looks great on the patterned wall.

Look What I found on Etsy

I am not very good with scissors, so the idea of paper cut art has always fascinated me. The more detailed the better. I was looking around on Etsy.com and I cam across the work of Joe Bagley. He calls himself a full time paper cutting artist and it's not hard to see why. The great thing is he also able to do custom work. I have just started a new traditional style project and I think I will be putting some pieces in there. The Lighthouse image is so great...I am thinking of having him do a house portrait, it would be a great housewarming gift.

This is W!

So last night it was a preview of EVO, tonight it is the first shot of our Living Room at The W Hollywood Residences. I just got this shot today and I think it captures the room in such a great way. It was shot by Tim Street Porter whose work uses mainly natural lighting so it gives a stunning naturalistic feel to the images. Thank you to everyone who helped pull this all together, I will be writing more in the next few days about some of these people for whom I am eternally grateful.

This is EVO!

I have written recently about some of the model units that I have been working on in Los Angeles. One of them is finally complete. It will open to the public later this month, but today I am posting a quick preview of the living room. In the next few days I will write in more detail about some of the pieces, but for now, just enjoy the view.
